Council gets tough on dog poo upsurge

A CRACKDOWN on dog fouling in Bexhill has been announced by Rother District Council.

The authority has said ‘enough is enough’ on the subject of people letting their animals mess on pavements, promenades and in parks without clearing it up. A spokesman said that Rother is statistically one of the cleanest places in the country, but the council has noticed an upsurge recently in the amount of dog poo littering its streets.

As a result, Rother’s Sense of Place team – a group of officers who work to reduce environmental crime and improve the street scene – will be launching an operation to target offenders in the coming weeks. Officers will be monitoring hot spots in Bexhill with patrols and surveillance work.

The council is warning people who are caught not cleaning up after their dogs they are likely to end up with a fixed-fine penalty notice.

“It is a filthy practice and we will use our powers to punish people as appropriate,” said Rother District Council member for the environment Cllr Tony Ganly. “It not only damages the attractiveness of the district, but poses health risks as well.

“There are a great many responsible dog owners out there and the irresponsible minority cannot be allowed to give them a bad name.”
