Members last week voted to look into the possibility of using so-called 'green power' energy that is received from sustainable sources.

Cllr Alan Whittaker, chairman of the council's Agenda 21 sub committee, said: 'We're looking into using reusable sources for our energy-providers who do not use fossil fuels such as gas and oil, but rather wind or water.'

He said that providers of green power put their energy straight into the national grid and that this energy is no more expensive than traditional energy sources. 'All we need to do is make a telephone call,' he said.

Councillors also voted to look into other ways of enhancing their environmental record, including improving the insulation of council properties, introducing more economic ways of lighting buildings and even installing solar panels on the roof of the civic centre.
