A few years ago, Rother’s Core Strategy set out a requirement for at least 3,100 new homes to be built in the town between 2011 and 2028.

Of this, 318 have been constructed to date, with planning permission granted for a further 1,631 - many of these in North East Bexhill by the Link Road.

This means Rother has to find land for 1,151 homes by 2028.

Alternatively, Rother says that Northeye, a former RAF base and prison, could provide some 11,000sqm of business floorspace, a holiday park or go back to an ‘institutional use’.

The council has also earmarked space at the old High School site for a wet/dry leisure facility, large hotel, restaurant space, plus car/coach parking for a nearby school.

The new dwellings will include affordable housing.

The council is also looking for 27,262sqm of new business space, to meet its target of 60,000sqm up to 2028.

Land at Levetts Wood and Oaktree Farm, Sidley, is being earmarked for this purpose.

A public consultation is to be launched shortly.
