Council to meet Commissioners

A private meeting is being arranged between Bersted Parish Council and the Church Commissioners.

The councillors reluctantly agreed to the session behind closed doors after being told the commissioners would refuse to attend a public event.

But the councillors want one of the 33 commissioners '“ who are led by the Archbishop of Canterbury '“ to go along rather than employees.

Chief executive Andrew Brown and head of planning and development Stephen Melligan had been suggested to represent the commissioners.

The commission wants to develop hundreds of acres of farmland off Chalcraft Lane for housing and commercial use.

A protest campaign has been started against the proposals.

Parish council chairman Brian Knight said he was unhappy at having to exclude the public from meeting the commission.

"But it is going to give us the chance to let the commission know there are 14 people on the parish council who don't want their scheme," he stated.
