With the summer holidays fast approaching, and indulgent getaways the hot topic of conversation, new research from tyre and vehicle maintenance experts, ATS Euromaster has found that nearly three quarters of people in the South East plan to revive the Great British road trip and holiday in the UK this year.
The research has uncovered the formula for the perfect British domestic getaway: a family holiday, ideally in a Cornish cottage with a sea view.
Those polled in the South East also wanted a Great British pub within a quarter of a mile and local shops within a mile.
Despite the traffic, arguments and car sickness often associated with road trips, 88 per cent of those polled in the region suggest that the journey is always worth the effort. And while it should ideally take no more than three hours to reach a destination, the prospect of seeing the countryside and spending some valuable time with family from the pleasure of taking to the road.
A spokesperson for ATS Euromaster, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this summer, said: “Five decades ago, holidaying in the UK was one of life’s simple pleasures – memories were made as new places were explored and families were brought together.
“There’s a real feeling of nostalgia when you holiday in the UK as most of us have memories of playing eye-spy en route, eating fish and chips on the seafront and enjoying quality time together.
“We think it’s great that there’s currently a road trip revival and want to encourage people in the South East to prepare their cars, jump in and enjoy a great British holiday.”
The study, which was carried out among almost 2,000 adults also found that the major selling point for the majority of those polled (59 per cent) for ditching a foreign break in favour of a ‘staycation’ include the fact it is usually possible to leave home and arrive at your destination within the same day, often with time to spare.
A lack of confusing currency exchanges was also hailed as a plus point for 56 per cent of those polled – as was a language barrier (49 per cent). 55 per cent claimed that avoiding busy airports and security queues was also a major reason for staying in the UK.
ATS is offering a range of special promotions and discounts in centre this summer to ensure people in South East can enjoy a hassle free journey whilst on their Great British road trip.
