The statistics, obtained through a Freedom of Information request by Confused.com, come in the run up to Goodwood’s ‘Festival of Speed’.
One driver was clocked in a VW Golf at 116mph in Newells Lane, Chichester, just 24mph shy of the average speed recorded in 2015’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
The car insurance website is now warning motorists to refrain from putting their foot down and to enjoy the thrill of racing vicariously instead of in the driver’s seat.
Amanda Stretton, Motoring Editor at Confused.com, said: “It’s quite worrying to see just how many motorists in Sussex have broken the speed limit and are willing to flout the law. And with the Festival of Speed at Goodwood taking place from this Thursday (24th June) many motorists may get caught up in all the excitement.
“However, with some drivers reaching break-neck speeds, they are not only putting themselves at risk but they are putting other road users, pedestrians, and bystanders in danger too.
“While some drivers might think they have a valid excuse to speed, in reality, the risk posed to other drivers, as well as yourself, when speeding are incredibly high and the potential consequences could be fatal.
“Drivers who do get caught speeding could face repercussions, from a fine and points on your licence to a driving ban, not to mention increased insurance premiums. It’s a drivers’ responsibility to tell their insurer whether they have any convictions. Failure to do so could lead to a policy being invalid or the increased premium being backdated.”
The data provided for 2016 is up to 12th April 2016 and 21,110 motorists have been caught speeding by Sussex Police.
