The first Winter League match, between runners-up Cowdray Park and champions Bramley had to be called off, with both sides receiving two points each.

During this turbulent weather the final of the summer singles took place, with a new champion being crowned when Richard Keep (13 handicap) beat David Heard (seven), making full use of the shots he received.

The winter singles is already in full flow, and it is hoped the weather is kinder this year.

Prizes are awarded for the three best scores for each competition, and there are three prizes for the players with the best two aggregate scores from three rounds. Some 48 players took to the fairways in benign conditions, although the early starters faced a frost and a heavy mist.

The first group recorded three good scores with Mike Pratt setting an early target with 37 points. Bill Hummerston took the lead with an excellent 38 points but he too was overtaken by nine-handicapper Derek Smith, who recorded a fine 39 points.

Smith held the lead until the penultimate group returned with 21 handicapper Sam Howes registering a superb 40 points to clinch first prize. It was Howes’ first victory as a senior and puts him in a good position for the overall prize.

There is also a team competition where Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force teams compete against each other – this year, for the second year running, it was a victory for the Army.

The event and the sale of poppies raised a total of £175.

After the competition, new veterans’ captain David Blythe presented Don Hagell with his trophy and also announced his chosen charity for his year as captain.

The charity is Dreams Come True, based in Midhurst, whose mission is to bring joy to children who are terminally or seriously ill.

Many events held by the Chichester Golf Club veterans’ section will raise money for this fantastic cause.
