CRACK CHRISTMAS CRIME

EVERYONE knows that Christmas is a time for giving - but not everyone deserves to receive the presents that are often given away too easily.

With so many gifts under the tree, Christmas is perfect for burglars wanting to get merry, which is why Sussex Police have once again launched Operation Cracker.

Dennis Donovan, Force Crime Prevention Officer from the Community Safety Branch, said: "It's easy to see why a houseful of presents would be an easy target for a burglar. At Christmas time there are more valuables, not just under the tree but hidden in other rooms away from prying eyes. All it takes is a few moments to make sure a burglar doesn't have a better festive season than you and your family.

"Burglars will take any opportunity that comes their way. The fact that it's Christmas makes no difference to them. Empty boxes outside a house or presents which are easy to spot inside are just too tempting to resist, no matter how much misery burglary causes at this time of year."

Operation Cracker leaflets will be distributed throughout Sussex to raise public awareness, but these can printed out via the Force website www.sussex.police.uk.
