He set out to complete the Triathlong to support the charities who have helped his family over the last three years.

His daughter, Grace, who is now ten, was diagnosed with a brain tumour three years ago.

“Over the last three years, she has had two brain tumours removed surgically and had two courses of radiotherapy,” explained Dan.

“In the course of that, we have received a lot of support from various charities, friends and family.

“As a way to respond positively to this incredible journey, I wanted to do something to raise awareness and money for the charities I am passionate about. Rather than go and do some adventure challenge overseas, I thought I could do it right here in my life where I am.”

Dan, from Chichester, started the Triathlong on January 1 and will complete it on December 31, followed by a ‘big finish’ on January 3.

Describing it as a ‘crazy challenge’, he said it was the equivalent of running from Land’s End to John O’Groats, swimming The Channel and then cycling the Tour de France.

“Throughout this year, I have been swimming 23 miles, running 870 miles and cycling 2,270 miles in smaller chunks, on my local roads, paths and in the pool,” said Dan.

“As part of the challenge, I did the Chi Triathlon and the Chi Half Marathon. I want to raise money for charities that supported me and/or look after children in troubling situations.”

As well as The Sussex Snowdrop Trust, which has given the family considerable financial support, Dan is fundraising for Chichester-based Children on the Edge and Clic Sargent.
