Credit crunch cooking course is on the menu

Tasty meals are on the menu at a Bognor Regis club.

Cookery courses are about to start at the town's youth and community centre in Westloats Lane. The aim is to teach basic skills with saucepans, grills and ovens on a credit crunch budget.

The courses will last for two hours a week for five weeks.

Their launch follows the choice of the club for a Jamie Oliver-style trainee scheme.

This was attended by 15 health workers, teaching assistants and volunteers.

They learnt how to run their own cookery clubs across the county.

West Sussex Primary Care Trust (PCT) ran the session to continue its policy of ensuring the facts about good cooking could become better known.

Course leader Karen Dennison, the trust's food and health projects co-ordinator, said: "We know some people have just never had the opportunity to learn how to cook good, wholesome, nutritious food and we want to help people to learn these skills."

The Bognor courses will be run by the Bognor Community Action Network.

Its development manager, Carol Fullick, said "We are delighted that the PCT chose to run the training course here and we are really excited about the cookery clubs that we will be running from here next year.

"This will complement other lifestyle initiatives that we are undertaking from the centre."

Anyone who feels they can benefit from learning some basic cookery skills can contact her on 01243 870406.
