Mayor Richard Bye did the honours at Battle Cricket Club last Saturday (25th May) when he cut the ribbon to formally “open” the new gate that the club had made as part of the celebrations for its historic 275th anniversary this year.

The pedestrian gate to the club’s ground at George Meadow has for some time been in dire need of repair. So Chairman Stuart Reeves set about getting some youngsters from his school to create a new gate as a part of their work experience programme. The result is a fantastic solid wood gate that fits the surroundings of this ancient ground perfectly.

And Mayor Bye was on hand to mark the occasion. Cutting the ribbon, Mr Bye said “The club has to be congratulated for the efforts it has made to ‘rise from the ashes’ after the burning down of its pavilion a few years ago. The club’s efforts to preserve the ground for the benefit of the whole community are commendable. I am extremely proud to be the first person to open the new gate, and I trust that it will serve the club and community for another 275 years.”
