Billingshurst man’s career in doubt after arm is broken in three places by car

Paul Samuel Rowland, 57, of Billinghurst, said he was left screaming in agony after his right arm was hit by a car wing mirror on the A29 Stane Street, Billingshurst, in the morning of Friday October 25.

The warehouse worker, who needs to be able to lift for his job in Slinfold, said: “The person has caused me a lot of pain and distress for a start.

“[It] has caused a lot of uncertainty about my future work and financial situation as there’s possibly no way of getting this compensated.”

Mr Rowland’s employers are liaising with his doctor to assess what his duties will be at the warehouse while his dominant arm recovers.

Surgeons at the hospital placed two plates and three screws in his arm on November 5 and 6, which was followed by ‘worse pain than the actual incident’, Mr Rowland added.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “At 7.40am on Friday October 25 a car was in collision with a man walking north along the A29 at Slinfold, near Slinfold Golf Club.

“The man, who was wearing a reflective jacket, was apparently struck by a wing mirror which then fell from the vehicle.

“The vehicle, a large dull-coloured saloon, possibly a Mercedes Benz, failed to stop.”

Mr Rowland believes it could have also been Vauxhall Astra.

The spokesman added: “Officers are continuing to investigate the incident. Anyone who saw what happened or who has other information is asked to phone Sussex Police on 101, quoting 0988 of 25/10, or e-mail: [email protected]”
