Car parts stolen from two vehicles in Eastbourne

Police said one incident was reported in Carlton Road while the other occurred off Neville Road.

A Sussex Police spokesperson said, “Thefts of catalytic converters can not only have a serious financial impact on victims, but also an emotional impact as it can affect their day-to-day activity and livelihoods.

“Catalytic converters are stolen for the precious metals they contain, and can take offenders less than a few minutes to remove; these metals have surged in value recently, leading to more offences committed by organised crime networks.”

Officers have urged the public to protect their vehicles by enquiring about locks for their catalytic converter and to mark their car part as well as register it.

The spokesperson said, “Catalytic converters can be forensically marked using special liquids with a unique code detectable under a UV light.

“This can make it harder for thieves to dispose of stolen catalytic converters, and can lead to the detection of crime and reunite people with their property.”

Residents have also been encouraged to park somewhere well-lit and overlooked, among as many cars as possible, or in a garage or secure compound.

Drivers can also park close to a wall or fence so their converter is difficult to reach.

The spokesperson said, “If you see anyone acting suspiciously around parked vehicles, report it to the police immediately.

“If you think it is a crime in action and a theft is occurring call 999, remember to obtain any details of a get-away vehicle and a description of the suspects.”
