Littlehampton groups sign up to Redeeming our Community scheme

POLICE, churches and other groups have joined forces to support a new community initiative in Littlehampton and the surrounding area.

More than 100 people pledged to answer a call to “Save our Society” at the launch of the Redeeming Our Community (ROC) scheme.

During the two-hour event at The Littlehampton Academy, people were urged to volunteer a few hours a week to help combat crime and anti-social behaviour, as well as supporting some of the most vulnerable members of society.

ROC, which has been running in Bognor since May and nationwide since 2004, is supported by Littlehampton’s Christian community and emergency services.

Roger Purdom, pastor at Parkside Evangelical Church, in St Flora’s Road, has been working closely with Sussex Police and Littlehampton’s Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) to launch the project.

He said: “This is a call to members in our community to stand up and be heard.

“The project is a chance to improve an already wonderful community base, in Littlehampton, Rustington, East Preston and Angmering.”

Groups in need of volunteers range from Neighbourhood Watch and HOMElink to Age UK and the Angmering Community Bus.

People can also be involved in brainstorming the future of the scheme during special ROC conversations.

Chief Insp Jane Derrick, Arun police district commander, said: “ROC is about actually making a difference.

“I can stand up and arrest someone, but it does not solve the problem entirely.

“We can put a plaster on that crack, but the crack is still there.

“The community coming together can help solve this.”
