A Horsham man who repeatedly sent money to people in the Philippines in return for indecent images of children has been jailed. Laurence Harvey, 65, of Searles View in Horsham, sent £46,467 to a number of people linked to child sexual exploitation between September 2, 2011, and August 9, 2021. He was arrested in May 2022, and several devices were seized and found to contain sexual images and communications with children. Harvey would communicate directly with the children and ask them to perform sexual acts, and in one instance sent a woman money in return for indecent images of a child she claimed was her daughter. He claimed the money was sent for charitable purposes, or to adults he had met on the internet in return for online sex acts. Harvey was subsequently charged with arranging the commission of a child sex offence, possession of an indecent photograph of a child, two counts making an indecent photograph of a child and two counts of arranging the sexual exploitation of a child under 13. He pleaded guilty to all charges and, at Lewes Crown Court on August 6, he was sentenced to 56 months in prison and given a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order severely restricting his use of digital devices, the internet and travel to the Philippines. 54. Locked up in Sussex 2024: These are some of the criminals jailed between May and August
In the early afternoon on June 8, a motorbike was stolen from the Mount Idol View area in Bexhill. At 1.30pm, the rider of the stolen bike, a 17-year-old from Bexhill, failed to give way at the junction of Cranston Avenue and Eastwood Road. He crashed at speed into a vehicle on Eastwood Road and was propelled off the motorcycle, over the back of the vehicle, and into the road. The motorcycle was written off in the incident, and the teenager was lucky to escape without serious injury. The 17-year-old was arrested two days later at their home address on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence, using a vehicle without insurance, and for driving whilst disqualified. He was taken to custody and interviewed, and then bailed while necessary enquiries took place. On July 9, the teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Hastings Youth Court, charged with handling stolen goods, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence, using a vehicle without insurance, and for driving whilst disqualified. He was then bailed from court pending his next hearing. On August 12 at Hastings Magistrates' Court, he entered a guilty plea to all offences with the exception of handling stolen goods which remains on file. He was sentenced the same day to 26 weeks imprisonment. Photo: Sussex Police

Sebastian Chojnacki, 29, of no fixed address, was sentenced on August 14 following the theft of an e-bike in February. On February 20, an electric bike was securely locked in a caged bike storage area inside a private car park in Davigdor Road, Hove. At around 1.30pm, Chojnacki entered the car park and over the next 20 minutes, broke into the storage area and cut through the lock, before making off with the stolen bike. On April 6, a man matching Chojnacki's description was seen in the Dyke Road area by patrolling PCSOs. An officer attended and was told that Chojnacki had entered an underground carpark in attempt to evade police. He was found hiding in the waste disposal area by the officer a short while later. Chojnacki was arrested on suspicion of theft, and bailed the following day to allow time for further necessary enquiries to be undertaken. Later that month, on April 25, Chojnacki was charged with the offence. After failing to comply with his bail conditions, he was further arrested on April 30 and bailed ahead of his next hearing on May 1. Chojnacki failed to appear for his court hearing on July 5, and was arrested in Hove on July 24 after a warrant was executed for his arrest. He pleaded guilty to the theft and for failing to surrender to police on July 25 at Brighton Magistrates' Court, and was remanded into custody to await his sentencing. At Brighton Magistrates' Court on August 14, Chojnacki was sentenced to 26 weeks in prison and fined £2,515. Photo: Sussex Police
