Shane ‘Blue’ Gibbs, who drugged and raped multiple women and girls across Sussex, has been given a life sentence. At the same court on March 14, Gibbs was given a life sentence and ordered to serve a minimum of 18 years and 299 days in custody. Five of his victims he stupefied with drugs, before raping them. All of the victims were supported by specialist officers, while Gibbs was located in a Portsmouth hotel on January 4, 2024, and arrested. 23. Locked up in Sussex 2025: These are some of the criminals jailed between January and April
A Crawley man who subjected a woman to ten years of rape, assaults and controlling behaviour has been jailed. Between 2014 and 2024, Wojciech Burylo, 50, of Calvin Walk in Bewbush, used sexual and physical violence, and threats of murder, to control large parts of her life. The victim received more than 40 calls a day from Burylo asking where she was and threatening her with extreme violence, such as decapitation. She reported the offending to Sussex Police in January 2024, when he was arrested and released on bail with strict conditions and a Domestic Violence Protection Notice designed to stop him causing any further harm to the victim. Within an hour of leaving custody he used a member of the public’s phone to call the victim and continued to message her. He was swiftly arrested and remanded in custody, where he continued to send threatening letters to the victim. At Lewes Crown Court on July 9, 2024, Burylo was found guilty of three counts of rape, three counts of making threats to kill and one count of battery. At the same court on March 10, he was sentenced to 20 years, with 15 to be spent in custody and another five on extended licence. He was also given an indefinite restraining order against the victim and will be a registered sex offender for life. Passing sentence, HHJ Chapple described Burylo as ‘obsessional, controlling, coercive and dominating’, and that he made his victim’s life ‘a misery’. He praised the victim as a ‘brave and remarkable woman’. Photo: Sussex Police

24. Locked up in Sussex 2025: These are some of the criminals jailed between January and April
A disqualified motorcycle rider has been sentenced for causing a fatal collision. Kieran Shaw, 21, failed to see pedestrian Janet Jacob crossing the B2140 Worthing Road at East Preston. He collided with the 81-year-old, who sustained critical injuries and later died in hospital. Shaw had been disqualified after a conviction for dangerous driving a year earlier, but showed a “blatant disregard for the law”. He gave false details to police when stopped during the course of his driving and motorcycle riding ban. At Lewes Crown Court on February 28, he admitted causing the death of Mrs Jacob after driving while disqualified. The court was told about how the incident happened at about 3.35pm on October 25, 2022. Witnesses saw Shaw’s vehicle crashing into Mrs Jacob as she crossed the road. Later estimates put Shaw’s speed between 27mph and 38mph in the 30mph limit. He was listening to music via a Bluetooth speaker in his helmet, but denied being distracted. The then 18-year-old was riding a Yamaha Tracer 700 motorcycle that was too powerful for his age range. The judge noted that even if Shaw was not disqualified, he should not have been riding this type of motorcycle. Mrs Jacob was taken to hospital where she later died. Her family described her as a caring, compassionate and loving mother and grandmother. They said the collision was a harrowing ordeal for the family. Shaw, formerly a roofer of Trinity Way, Littlehampton, was jailed for three years and nine months. He was further disqualified from driving for six-and-a-half years. Photo: Sussex Police
