A dangerous driver who led police on a pursuit through Arundel has been sentenced. Marley Keet, 28, was already disqualified from driving when he was seen by officers. He failed to stop, and made off from police at high speed. During a 15-minute pursuit he collided with other vehicles and drove dangerously. Keet drove into a rural dead end, and tried to hide in the back of the van he was driving. But he was arrested and charged with dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving without valid insurance, and failing to provide a specimen of breath for analysis. At Lewes Crown Court on June 17 he was sentenced to one year in prison, and was further disqualified from driving for two-and-a-half years. Keet, of Old Market Lane, Littlehampton, had been approached by officers outside Arundel at 1pm on April 13. He drove off from officers, and was seen weaving in and out of traffic during a pursuit. Later, he drove the wrong way around a roundabout, and drove towards Amberley during a pursuit, before eventually he was safely stopped. Photo: Sussex Police

A care home worker who stole sentimental jewellery from an elderly resident has been jailed. Police were called after staff at Bethune Court in Boscobel Road, Hastings, reported the theft on March 21, 2024. The victim – an 82-year-old woman – discovered jewellery, including her late husband’s gold wedding ring, had been taken from the bedside table in her private room. As enquiries were ongoing, the victim’s family posted an appeal for information on social media. This was seen by a local pawnbroker, who believed they had recently accepted the same ring from regular customer. She was identified as Rita Cooney, who worked as a housekeeper at the care home. The 58-year-old, of Hillcrest Avenue, Bexhill, was arrested and charged with theft, which she was convicted of. At Lewes Crown Court on August 14, she was sentenced to 15 months’ imprisonment. She was also charged with fraud, and that offence will lie on file. Photo: Sussex Police

40. Locked up in Sussex 2025: These are some of the criminals jailed between May and August
A 71-year-old man who attempted to rob a bank in St Leonards has been jailed again. Alan Slattery entered Nationwide, in London Road, on April 30 and approached the front counter. He did not say anything but passed over a note which read: ‘PASS ME THE TEN’S AND TWENTY’S, I’M SERIOUS (sic).’ He was immediately recognised by a member of staff from a previous incident – Slattery was jailed for 32 months in April 2023 after he committed offences in strikingly similar circumstances at Nationwide in St Leonards and Bexhill, and Natwest in Bexhill. The staff worker called police and Slattery left the premises empty handed. He was arrested a short time later on the platform of St Leonards Warrior Square railway station. Slattery, of Bury Street, Edmonton, Enfield, was charged with attempted robbery, which he pleaded guilty to. He was remanded in custody and appeared at Lewes Crown Court on July 28, where he was sentenced to 21 months’ imprisonment. He was also given a five-year restraining order which prohibits him from entering the St Leonards branch of Nationwide. Photo: Sussex Police
