In July 2022, police received a report from Social Services that the victim had been sexually abused by Steven Smith in June of that year. At the time of the report, Smith was already subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) relating to a conviction for child sex offences in 2017. The order prohibited Smith from having contact with male children under 18. Smith, 28, of Lower Street in Pulborough, was arrested and charged with rape of a male child under 13, attempted rape of a boy under 13, sexual assault by touching of a boy under 13, and breach of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order. At Lewes Crown Court on August 21, 2024, Smith pleaded not guilty to all charges, but later admitted the breach of the SHPO. Following a trial he was further convicted of attempted rape and sexual assault, and at Lewes Crown Court on November 3, he was sentenced to nine years in prison. Smith was also made subject to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and will remain a registered sex offender for life. Photo: Sussex Police

A serving prisoner has had his sentence increased after being convicted of further offences. Jack Reeder is currently serving 34 months’ imprisonment for robbery at the Co-Op in Ham Road, Shoreham, on May 10. While in custody, detectives investigated a report of a car stolen from Bushby Close, Lancing, in the early hours of March 27. The vehicle activated a number of ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) cameras and was pursued to Saltdean, where the driver decamped. Following a short search by officers, assisted by excellent tracking and detaining by Police Dog Hox, the driver was located and identified as Reeder, 34, of Seafield Road, Hove. He failed a roadside test for cocaine and cannabis, and also assaulted an officer in custody. He was subsequently arrested and charged with the following offences: aggravated vehicle taking; failing to stop when required by police; theft of a vehicle; two counts of drug-driving; driving without valid insurance; assaulting a police officer in the execution of their duty. Reeder was presented before Brighton Magistrates’ Court on October 29, where he pleaded guilty to all offences and was sentenced to a total of 24 weeks’ imprisonment, to run consecutively to his existing sentence. He was also disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for 18 months. Photo: Sussex Police

A Brighton man convicted of raping two teenagers - when he was a teenager himself - has been jailed. Toby Macenzie, 24, of Carlyle Street in Brighton, appeared at crown court sitting in Brighton on November 7 following a conviction of two counts of rape. In 2018, Sussex Police received reports from two teenage girls of having been raped by a boy known to them. The first victim reported Macenzie had raped her and subjected her to a serious sexual assault in 2018. In June of that year, Macenzie also raped a teenage girl in his home after providing her with alcohol. The victim woke to find Macenzie raping her in a bedroom. She became unwell and was unable to leave the room, at which point she was raped for a second time by Macenzie. Text messages on her phone after the attacks showed the victim reiterating that she had not consented, and Macenzie ‘apologising’ for his crimes. Both victims were supported by specialist officers, which has remained throughout the court process. Macenzie was arrested and subsequently charged with two counts of raping a girl, attempted rape of a woman over 16 and assault by penetration. At Lewes Crown Court on May 20, he was found guilty of all counts. At crown court sitting in Brighton on November 7, he was jailed for four years and six months. Photo: Sussex Police
