A stalker who repeatedly targeted a woman known to him in West Sussex has been jailed. Mark Coop, 38, entered the victim’s property late at night on one occasion, and again attempted to gain access while wearing a balaclava. He attempted to manipulate the victim by threatening to harm himself. The victim reported receiving multiple messages and unwanted phone calls where Coop knew her location. It left her in fear of living in her own home and afraid of being followed. Coop repeatedly failed to comply with police and court orders. He was arrested by police, charged with stalking involving fear of serious violence, alarm or distress, and remanded in custody. At Lewes Crown Court on March 12 he admitted the charge and appeared for sentence. Coop, of no fixed address, was jailed for four years and six months for the offences, and the court also imposed a ten-year restraining order restricting his access to the victim and others known to her. The order forbids him from entering an exclusion zone in the West Worthing area, including Durrington, West Tarring, Salvington, Goring and Offington. The court was told how the dangerous behaviour extended from August to October last year. In an impact statement, the victim described how Coop’s behaviour, turning up at her home in the middle of the night while intoxicated, was “beyond terrifying”. She described the ongoing effect both on her and her young children, and described how Coop has displayed erratic, threatening and manipulative behaviour that left her fearful in her own address. A man has been jailed after he pointed an imitation firearm at a paramedic, causing him to fear for his life. Clive Monamy dialled 999 on the evening of May 5, 2024, and requested an ambulance due to his mental health. A South East Coast Ambulance employee responded to the address in Hide Gardens, Rustington, and was met with a barrage of abuse from the defendant. Monamy refused any treatment – despite requesting it by telephone – so the paramedic decided to leave the address. As he did so, the defendant said: “I have something for you,” and produced a black handgun from beneath a pillow and pointed it directly in the victim’s face. Acting on instinct, the paramedic lunged at Monamy and disarmed him, before fleeing the address and calling police. Officers attended and located the weapon, which was confirmed to be a BB gun. They arrested the 65-year-old, who was subsequently charged with possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence. Monamy, who is retired, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 20 months’ imprisonment at Lewes Crown Court on February 27. Photo: Sussex Police
