Police attended an address in Milward Crescent, Hastings on November 30, 2024, following a report that a woman had been raped. On the evening of the incident, the victim opened the door in response to a knock, expecting it to be a delivery. Instead, it was a masked man, unknown to her. The man, later identified as Jason Wren, 32, of Redmayne Drive in Hastings, attacked her and made threats if she made any noise. Around 15 minutes later he fled the scene and was captured on CCTV leaving the area. The victim dialled 999, and specialist officers were immediately deployed to support and investigate. House to house, CCTV and witness enquiries were promptly undertaken, leading officers to one suspect, Wren. He was seen circling the area prior to the incident, and witnesses who passed him noticed his odd behaviour. Following a media appeal to identify the man seen on CCTV, Wren handed himself into Hastings police station on December 7 where he was arrested on suspicion of rape. In his interview he categorically denied the allegation, stating that it had been a consensual encounter with the victim that had been arranged the day before when they had passed each other in the street. Despite Wren's claim, charges were authorised the following day for rape, attempted rape and knowingly/recklessly trespassing on a premises with the intent to commit a sexual offence. He was remanded into custody and pleaded not guilty to the offences when he appeared in court on January 6. On June 3, following a six-day trial at Hove Crown Court, the jury found Wren guilty of all offences and he was remanded into custody to await his sentencing. He appeared again at Hove Crown Court on September 12 where he was jailed for 15 years. He has been ordered to serve a further seven years on licence. Photo: Sussex Police
