A former Buddhist monk has been convicted of further historic sexual offences committed against a girl in Sussex and a girl in Nottinghamshire. Koji Takeuchi, formerly Buddha Maitreya, was convicted in 2020 for sexually abusing a young girl in Brighton in the 1970s and early 1980s. The 82-year-old was already serving a four-year prison sentence for the sexual offences against the girl over several years. Following that conviction, two victims came forward separately to Sussex Police to report what had happened to them. On Wednesday, September 21, Takeuchi appeared before Hove Crown Court where he admitted sexual offences committed against them. His Honour Judge Jeremy Gold QC said Takeuchi had abused a position of trust in order to carry out the offences. Takeuchi, formerly of Trent Lane, North Clifton near Newark, Nottinghamshire, was already serving a custodial sentence, and is a registered sex offender for life. The judge further sentenced him to a further two years in prison in total for the subsequent victims. Takeuchi will remain on the sex offenders register for life, and a Sexual Harm Prevention Order will continue to be in place to restrict his access to children upon his release. Photo: Sussex Police

A man who stabbed a 15-year-old boy in Eastbourne has been given an extended sentence of 11-and-a-half years. Joseph Heavey, 32, was sentenced at Lewes Crown Court on Friday, September 2 having been convicted in August 2021 of wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm. The charge related to an attack on a teenager in Seaside, Eastbourne, on the afternoon of January 11, 2021. The victim had been visiting a friend who lived in the same building as Heavey when the two became involved in an argument inside the property. The victim ran from the address, followed by Heavey, and the disagreement continued on the street outside. Heavey is then seen on CCTV to return to the address before coming back outside with a knife. He uses the weapon to stab the victim, causing a serious wound to the boy’s left arm. The victim runs away and is found by police officers on patrol moments later. He is taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton for treatment including surgery. Heavey, who had returned to the address and tried to hide the knife in the oven, was arrested. He was later charged and pleaded not guilty to wounding with intent. He was convicted by a jury after trial and sentenced to eight years and six months in prison with a further three years on extended licence. Heavey, unemployed, of Old London Road in Hastings, was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £190. Photo: Sussex Police

A Crawley man has been sentenced for a series of sexual offences against a young girl over many years following a police investigation, Sussex Police has reported. Roger Robinson, 69, of Beachy Road, Crawley, was sentenced at Hove Crown Court on Monday, September 5, having been convicted at a trial in April of 14 counts of rape and four of indecent assault, Sussex Police said. Her Honour Judge Shani Barnes described Robinson’s offences as a “campaign of rape” that represented the “grossest breach of trust”. She described Robinson as a “predator” who enjoyed the power he had over the victim. Sussex Police said Robinson was sentenced to a 22-year sentence, including 18 years in prison and four years on an extended-licence period. The judge added the four extra years on his licence after concluding he passed a legal test of “dangerousness” which is a sentencing option reserved for the most serious offenders, police added. It means Robinson is not entitled to be released half way through his custodial sentence, and instead will serve a minimum of two-thirds of the sentence in prison before he can be considered eligible for parole, Sussex Police added. Police said the judge also imposed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order which restricts Robinson’s access to children when he is released. Photo: Sussex Police
