The 64-year-old’s injuries include bleeding on the brain, punctured lungs and a broken eye socket.

Barry Horne, Eric’s son, said: “My dad's neighbour rang me and told me he had been taken to hospital by ambulance because he had been attacked in his home. I rushed up to the hospital and found that he had been taken to the Resuscitation Ward.

“He was unconscious at that point, but they managed to get him round and he spent a couple of days there. They moved him from the Resuscitation Ward to a more general Trauma Ward. He then started getting poorly again and he is now in intensive care at the moment.

“I'm hoping things will start improving, but there is a lot of damage to his lungs and multiple rib fractures. They [the masked men] were stomping and jumping up and down on him,you can see the footprints imprinted in the skin on his chest. So those fractures have in turn led to both of his lungs being punctured. He’s struggling to breathe at the minute.”

Barry also said in a Facebook post: "I’m heartbroken for my poor dad. Nobody deserves this. Please feel free to chat about this to friends and family, share the post and spread the word. I’m hoping the more people that know about it may generate some leads.

In particular anyone connected to the Peacehaven area where the cowardly act took place. Opposite Toyota Garage on The South Coast Road, 20:00 on Monday 10th January 2022."

Sussex Police are yet to release a statement regarding the attack.
