Police chase ends in second arrest over post office robbery

Sussex Police said a second man has been arrested in connection with a Brighton post office robbery.

The arrest came after a police chase where the suspect failed to stop and then collided with a police car, officers said.

A police spokesperson said: “Officers pursued a vehicle of interest along Telscombe Way, Peacehaven, at around 12.40pm on Tuesday (January 22).

“The vehicle came to a stop when it collided and caused minor damage to a police vehicle.

“An 18-year-old man from Brighton was arrested on suspicion of the robbery at the post office, failing to stop, dangerous driving, driving under the influence of drugs, driving without a licence.

“He was also arrested on suspicion of two other robberies – a knifepoint robbery in Whitehawk Road, Brighton on Wednesday January 2 and a knifepoint robbery of a taxi driver in Manor Hill, Brighton, on Thursday January 3.

“After being interviewed the man was released on police bail until February 12 while enquiries continue.”

Other arrests were made after the police chase, police said.

The spokesperson added: “Two 16-year-old girls from Brighton, who were also in the vehicle, were both arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking and one was further arrested on suspicion of possession of a class A drug. Both were released under investigation.

“A second man is still being sought after he fled from the vehicle. Officers, assisted by the police helicopter, conducted an area search but the suspect was not located.”
