Restaurateur charged after elderly woman injured in Brighton’s London Road

A man detained by an off-duty police officer has been charged with committing multiple offences in Brighton.

Abbas Ahmad was arrested by the Special Constable in London Road shortly before 1pm on Friday (September 6).

During the incident, an elderly woman was knocked to the floor and suffered a head injury. She was taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton for treatment and has since been discharged.

Police said Ahmad, 38, a restauranteur, of no fixed address, is charged with assault, offering to supply cannabis, possession with intent to supply cannabis, assault on an emergency worker and obstructing a police officer in the execution of their duty.

He appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Saturday (September 7), where he was remanded in custody ahead of a pre-trial preparation hearing on October 4.
