Rogue traders target ‘vulnerable’ Eastbourne residents

A spokesperson from Sussex Police said, “They all have had similar nature and people have lost money through them.

“Residents have either had a flyer delivered to them offering general household or garden work, or been approached by a male offering to do work for them.”

According to police, victims have tended to be older, and many live alone.

The spokesperson said, “A quote has then been offered to complete some work and a request made to pay some money up front.

“The scammer has then ‘left to go and get their equipment’. The suspect has then not returned at all.

“These scams are very easily fallen for, the trader appears genuine and they are offering a service the residents need.

“These fraudsters know how to target those most vulnerable in our communities and have no hesitations about stealing their cash.“

Police said their investigation into this matter continues and they are working with partners to identify offenders.

Schemes such as ‘buy with confidence’ exist to provide some support for residents in making choices on which businesses to use.

Being a Trading Standards-backed scheme, it can often be one of the best ways of getting reliable businesses to complete any work that needs doing, according to police.

The spokesperson said, “Elderly neighbours and relatives may also need your support in looking for fair business to use.

“Be kind and offer any help that you can give.”
