The County Times reported last month that Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne had launched a recruitment drive for more of the voluntary police officers.

Sergeant Bob Trevis of Horsham police said: “For people to give up their time to do something as demanding as police work is amazing really.

“For the Horsham district we have got an excellent team of Specials who are a real support. So many of them do the job so well.”

More than 600 people have applied for 120 voluntary roles, in addition to the 300 special constables already volunteering in Sussex.

Special constables have contributed 60,000 hours of volunteering so far this year.

SC Jackie Connor said: “I think any help we can give to help our colleagues would be welcomed across the force.”

Special constables come from a huge variety of professions, and many companies support staff through their police training.

SC Connor joked: “One of the guys who is about to join is an estate agent - but we don’t hold it against him.”
