Witness appeal after man seriously injured in Burgess Hill incident

The victim suffered serious injuries in the accident which happened at about 7pm on Thursday evening near Burgess Hill railway station.

He was comforted at the scene by passersby and covered with a makeshift blanket before being treated by paramedics.

He was then taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, where the trauma centre for Mid Sussex is situated.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “A 42-year-old local man has been taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton with serious but non life threatening injuries, following a collision with a red Peugeot car on the B2113, Burgess Hill on Thursday 28 March.

“Police and other emergency services arrived at Station Road near Burgess Hill Railway Station at around 7.05pm.

“The road was closed for around an hour whilst the injured man was attended to and the vehicle recovered from the scene.

“The Peugoet driver, an 82-year-old woman from West Sussex, was not injured.”

It is not clear how the accident happened, whether the man was crossing the road or came into contact with the car by some other means.

The Peugeot appeared to have a shattered windscreen but no other obvious damage and remained on the carriageway on a stretch of Station Road opposite shops.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the accident.
