Crooks make the most of warm weather

A SPATE of burglaries in Lewes may have been due to people leaving their doors and windows open because of warmer weather.

Lewes police are investigating seven burglaries.

Police are linking the burglaries at houses in Southover High Street, Pipe Passage, Hawkenbury Way, Rufus Close, The Avenue and the White Hart Hotel.

Handbags were stolen in several of the burglaries and a laptop was taken from one address.

A VW Passat car was also driven away, but later recovered, using stolen keys.

Police have increased patrols as a result of the burglaries.

PC Duncan Ellison said: 'We urge people to make sure doors and windows

on the ground floor are locked.

'It is common in the warmer summer months for people to leave windows open but the opportunist burglar may see this as the ideal entry point.

'We are currently following several lines of enquiry.'
