Crossing work begins

SIX years of relentless campaigning finally paid off this week when work started on a new pedestrian crossing.

County councillor Irene Richards has tirelessly battled with the local authorities to get a crossing installed by Safeways' supermarket, in town, so shoppers don't have to "dice with death" every time they want to cross the busy road.

Work is due to be completed just in time for Christmas '” traditionally the town's busiest time of year.

Mrs Richards said: "I don't think there is one area in Worthing that will not benefit from this crossing.

"During my campaign I spoke to a lot of pedestrians and taxi drivers as well and they all commented what a positive difference the crossing would make.

"At the moment people are taking their lives in their hands when they cross. It was terribly dangerous.

"I think it is a win, win, win situation."

Mrs Richards, a ward councillor for East Worthing, added: "I have worked solidly for six years to try and get this crossing through. I became a bit like a little terrier. I just wouldn't let it go.

"I am delighted to see work has started and am looking forward to it being completed by Christmas."
