Crucifixion performed for Easter

The Easter concert, at St Mary de Haura Church in Shoreham on April 18 at 7.30pm, will also include part of Felix Mendelssohn’s Christus.

Choir member Brian Hills said: “First performed in 1887, Stainer’s Crucifixion became his most lasting work, using dramatic choruses and hymns to retell the story.

“The Mendelssohn part uses the choir playing the crowd calling for Jesus’ death and the release of Barabbas.

“The story itself is told by the soloist, who on this occasion will be the celebrated tenor Neil Jenkins, whose idea it was in 2003 to link the two works to such wonderful effect.”

The baritone part will be performed by Ed Hawkins, well known to supporters of the choir, the organ will be played by Nicholas Houghton and timpani by Stephanie Snuggs.

Mr Hill said: “It is advisable to arrive in good time, as the church is always full for these occasions.”
