Crusade to clam traffic in Pebsham

A CRUSADING resident has met with councillors and Bexhill's MP to try and get traffic calming introduced to Pebsham.

John Allen, of Haslam Crescent, is concerned about speeding vehicles along Seabourne Road.

His campaign for safety measures was backed by a group of Pebsham representatives last Friday.

Mr Allen claims East Sussex County Council have so far told him no measures will be implemented due to the low number of accidents on the road

But he remains undeterred and has collected a petition signed by almost all the residents of Seabourne Road.

Now his campaign has been taken up by MP Gregory Barker, Rother councillors Peter Fairhurst and Charles Clark and East Sussex County Councillor Martyn Forster.

Mr Allen said: "It seems ridiculous you have to wait for an accident to happen. Prevention is better than cure, that's the key thing.

"Sooner or later there will be a nasty accident."

Cllr Clark said: "In my last ward survey 600 residents voiced concerns about speeding in Seabourne Road and Pebsham Lane. I requested highways installed flashing light warning signs - this was refused as they only have enough money to put in flashing lights at accident black spots.

"They appear to lack resources to carry out works to prevent accidents before they happen. Why can't we have a 20 miles per hour limit in residential areas?"

Cllr Peter Fairhurst said the road had become a "rat run" and, "with a lot of children and old people about I think we need road safety."

His views were echoed by Cllr Forster. He said: "I think there is a very strong case for traffic calming here. I admire John and the work he has done talking to people."

Mr Barker, pictured above with campaigners, agreed to join in the pressure after talking to the group.

He said: " It is clear the transport department aren't listening to local people. I shall be making sure that the voice of Pebsham is heard loud and clear at Lewes."
