Cup loss ends United's unbeaten run

BEXHILL UNITED 1; UCKFIELD TOWN 2BEXHILL United's six match unbeaten sequence came to a halt in an insipid SCFA Sussex Division Three Cup first round tie on Saturday.

Two rapid-fire goals around the 70 minute mark from the visitors proved the turning point in the match and, although Steve Mote pulled one back for Bexhill in the 89th minute, it was too little, too late. But, as most sides knocked out of cup competitions at an early stage readily concede, at least it wasn't a league game!

"That was what we were feeling afterwards," said manager Billy Trivett. "I would say it (the Division Three Cup) was the lowest in our list of priorities. We learnt an important lesson in that we can match these teams in the battles but we have to be a little bit smarter. We didn't control the game in midfield and we left the defence a little bit exposed at times."

United's reserve team manager Chas Tibbutt believes their first win in the Reserve Section East is just around the corner despite a "frustrating" 2-1 reverse at previously second-bottom outfit Newhaven on Saturday "We've got a run of four home games now and I'm confident it's not far away," he said. Ben Elphick gave United a lead via a header from a corner but a pair of strikes in the final 20 minutes gave Uckfield the win.

Matt Cornelius, a first team regular last season, is in the squad for the visit from Seaford tomorrow (Saturday) after signing this week. Kick-off 2.15pm.
