Cyclist raises thousands for charity

Pedal power helped one local shop worker to raise more than £1,000.

Mike Gillett, who works at Cash Generator in Queens Road, was one of a host of assistants from the firm to take part in a national cycle challenge.

And Mr Gillett, 23 of Milward Road, managed to raise £250 – taking his total fundraising for the year to more than £1,000.

The cash will go to national children’s charity Make A Wish Foundation which helps grant the wishes of children aged between three and 17 who have been affected by a life-threatening illness.

After months of training, Mr Gillett completed his ten mile cycle in a personal best time. It was the second time that the dynamic shop assistant had taken part in the relay-style cycle challenge, which launched last year and has affectionately become known as Tour de Cash Generator.

Speaking afterwards he said: “The training was hard work but enjoyable. I am so pleased that I’ve been able to take part and want to thank all of our customers, friends and families for sponsoring me and helping to raise so much for Make-A-Wish.

“This is the second time this store has been involved in Tour de Cash Generator and we’re delighted that it’s going to become an annual event.

“We are already looking forward to competing next year and hope to be just as successful, if not more.”

Rebecca Jones, of the Make-A -Wish Foundation, thanked Mr Gillett – and the rest of the Cash Generator team – for their efforts and said: “We are extremely proud of the team for completing the cycle and for giving up their own time so generously and we are looking forward to using the money raised to grant magical wishes.”
