‘Dangerous’ housing plans could open floodgates in Angmering

Campaigners fighting against widespread housing development in Angmering have described new proposals for 38 homes in the village as “the most dangerous” yet.

Sue Ware, of Save Angmering Village, has spoken of her mounting concern about emerging plans for a new housing development on land immediately north of Worthing Rugby Club’s grounds, in Roundstone Lane.

Sue claimed that if the scheme was approved by Arun District Council it could open the floodgates for hundreds more homes to be built in the village.

She said: “We’re not against small developments. We prefer developments of 10 or 20 homes. But this plan for 38 is completely unacceptable.

“It’s in totally the wrong site and if it is developed it would stick the foot in the door for other developers to flood the village with homes.

“It could set a precedent for other larger applications.

“This is one of the most dangerous applications Angmering has faced.”

The suggested site is situated on the unused land of the former nursery of JV Plants and would feature a variety of two, three, four and five-bedroom homes.

Sue added that, unlike the Barratt/David Wilson Homes’ plan for a further 150 homes on land north east of the proposed 38-homes site, there would no consultation by developers. The Barratt/David Wilson Homes planning application was due to be considered by Arun this month, but will now be decided in January.

In an email to Save Angmering Village, Gordon Rogers, town planning consultant for the landowners, said: “We will not be mounting an exhibition or major public consultation exercise in relation to this application as we feel the cost is not justified and the public’s views on further housing development in this area are well known.”
