'˜Deliberate' fire at Brighton church

Firefighters were called to Kemptown last night (June 15), to a fire at a church undergoing renovation.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said at 9.34am, one fire engine from Roedean and two from Preston Circus were sent to the scene.

A fire spokesperson said: “There was a fire at St John the Baptist Church on Bristol Road. The building was being renovated.

“The fire is being treated as deliberate.”

A Sussex Police spokesperson said: “A fire at a church in Brighton is being treated as arson.

“Police were alerted at 10.30pm on Thursday (June 15) by fire service colleagues who had been called to John the Baptist Church in Bristol Road.

“Fire and crime scene investigators were due to visit the scene on Friday morning.”
