Democracy stops wars

IN his recent letter to the WSG, the late Frank Pidgeon said he understood the efforts by some '˜right wing organistions' on the matter of the EU. I would urge people to try to understand some of the left-wingers too.

Tony Benn, Nigel Spearing and Lord Stoddart of Swindon, among many others are great champions of our freedom and democracy.

The EU, with the help of poeople such as Kenneth Clarke and Lord Mandelson, is trying to abolish the nations of Europe and coerce us all into a totalitarian superstate.

This is no way to avoid wars - quite the contrary. The best defence against unnecessary wars is democracy. Napoleon and Hitler, who had tried to get us into a united Europe, were not renowned for their democratic credentials.

If Greece, Ireland and Portugal were still sovereign nations with their own currencies, as their people wanted, they would not be in such as mess.

In the same edition of the WSG, we had another sound letter from Geoffrey Collier on the South Downs National Park.

As for the dismantling of the National Health Service, so also for the proliferations of National Parks. I suspected EU involvement when I saw the same thing happening in France.

Indeed, Lindsay Jenkins, talking about the South Downs National Park in her book ‘Disappearing Britain’, says “Planning powers are to be removed from all constituent towns.... The EU will ultimately control what the people of Lewes can or cannot do with their land and ho

uses...”

This explains why that great enthusiast for the European project, John Prescott, was so keen on the National Park.
