Development cash from Sainsbury's will be well spent in Bognor says council

MONEY from Sainsbury's will be spent carefully said Arun District Council.

Arun District council will receive 500,000 from the supermarket chain as part of the development of the LEC.

Leader of Arun District Council, Gillian Brown said: "It is a finite pot of funding.

"There are a number of ways in which it can be spent which are identified in the Section 106 agreement.

"We are asking the Bognor Regis Regeneration Board to guide us in how we can best spend the money towards furthering the regeneration of the town."

A recommendation supporting this was agreed by the Bognor Regis sub-committee.

Bognor Regis Regeneration Task Force co-ordinator Richard McMann said: "We have several options, we could spread the money out and have 500,000 1 projects but I am not convinced that would work, similarly we could put all of the money into one single scheme.

"We need to make absolutely sure that the money goes to the right projects, none of these projects can be delivered over night and nor should they be.

"What is key is that the regeneration of Bognor Regis cannot be delivered by one agency, it is a jigsaw, we need to create a culture of working together which is what the regeneration board encourages."

One of the possible proposals put forward last month by The Bognor Regis Civic Society was for free parking in the town centre.

Cllr Mrs Brown said: "We are looking into the proposal by the Civic Society for the introduction of free parking in Bognor Regis and are holding a meeting of all the interested parties on Tuesday 19 October."

The meeting will be an opportunity to discuss all of the options available Arun when deciding how the money should be spent.

The issue will be considered by Arun District Council's cabinet at its next meeting on October 18.
