Disabled parking blocked by buses

A disabled man has criticised bus drivers who blocked a parking area near Bognor Regis railway station.

Michael Cooper said he was stopped from using the disabled parking bay in Lyon Street West on Sunday, February 8, because of the double-deckers.

The vehicles were among those brought in to provide a replacement link for train passengers whose journeys were being disrupted by engineering works.

They usually park alongside the station in Richmond Road by the taxi rank. But two buses remained in the nearby restricted parking area for at least three hours.

Mr Cooper (57), of Markfield, North Bersted said nothing could be done about the fact that drivers entitled to use the bay for three cars were forced to go elsewhere.

"There were no police or traffic wardens to be seen as it was a Sunday. So, the bus drivers thought it would be OK without a care for anyone who holds blue badges and might need to use the area," he stated.

"It's bad enough that others use this area that have no disabilities to go into the shops in the street, but it is totally thoughtless and unbelievable for a bus to do so.

"I think that something should be done to stop this happening again. The buses, it would seem, were there to transport train passengers while work was carried out on the line. Why don't they use the station forecourt or car park and not the disabled parking area?"

A Southern spokeswoman said: "Southern is conducting a full investigation with the bus company into this incident.

"We would like to offer our apologies and, if our rail replacement buses were involved, we will ensure that actions are taken to ensure this does not occur again."
