Dish 'eyesore' on historic cottage

Listed building consent for a satellite dish on a thatched cottage in Yapton has been narrowly approved by councillors.

They agreed by seven votes to five, with two abstentions, to enable the TV equipment to be placed on the eastern wall of The Twelfth of Never in Church Lane.

A plea by Joanna Williams, a member of the conservation area advisory committee, to reject the proposals was unsuccessful.

She said the dish would be an eyesore on the 18th century cottage.

It should be resited more in keeping with the guidelines which stated such items should only be placed in areas where they were unobtrusive.

"We must look after our local and national heritage and uphold standards," she stated at last week's meeting of Arun District Council's development control committee.

Jonathan Parsons, a council planning officer, said: "The question is whether the dish has a significant impact on the appearance and character of the building.

"Your officers think it does not because of its position and relatively small size."

Cllr Ricky Bower (East Preston) said he believed the dish should be moved to the cottage's southern side and its height changed to lessen its impact.

Cllr Elaine Stainton (Felpham West) said: "Church Lane is quite unique. There are not many of our little villages left in conservation areas. This dish could be located in a more appropriate place."
