Disinfectant set off gas alarms at Brighton seafront hotel

The fire service was called to the Brighton hotel after a gas alarm sounded

An incident at a Brighton hotel which saw the seafront road sealed off yesterday afternoon (April 23) was causing by cleaning fluids.

Six fire crews were sent to the Brighton Harbour Hotel after a gas alarm sounded yesterday afternoon.

The A259 Kings Road at the end of West Street was closed while emergency services dealt with the incident, causing traffic delays.

Today (April 24), an East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were called to the Harbour Hotel, King Road, Brighton at 12:30 following reports of a gas alarm sounding.

The road was sealed off while the fire service investigated the cause of the fire alarm

"Crews from Roedean, Brighton, Hove, Lewes, Eastbourne, Newhaven and Battle attended.

"The Service attended an incident related to the storage of disinfectant chemicals used in connection with pools and spas.

"Crews used four gas tight suits and two breathing apparatus to carry out decontamination of the area.

"Crews left the scene at approximately 16:49. The hotel have issued a statement to say that the scene is now safe and the hotel is open to the public."
