On average two woman are killed every week in the UK as a result of domestic violence.

The shocking figures come as people across Rother take part in the annual White Ribbon campaign to make a stand against domestic violence.

Nationally one in four women and one in six men will be victims of domestic violence in their lifetime.

Sussex Police became the first police force in the country to gain White Ribbon Award status

Rother District Council supports the campaign and says domestic violence is an issue that affects adults and families across the district.

In the 12 months to the end September 2011 748 domestic abuse incidents in Rother were reported to Sussex Police.

There were 427 incidents in Bexhill, 14 in Battle (136 incidents in Battle policing area) and 19 in Rye (185 incidents in the Rye policing area.

Last year 2,256 people signed the White Ribbon pledge to ‘never commit, condone or remain silent about domestic violence’ .
