Doris celebrates big day twice

A North Bersted woman enjoyed two celebrations for her 100th birthday.

Doris Varney was taken out by her two sons, Lionel and Keith, and their wives for her special day on June 15.

This was followed two days later by a weekend family gathering of just under 30 relatives. They had booked a private room at a hotel for the celebrations which included a meal.

Among those present were Lionel and Keith, and their wives, her four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

One of Mrs Varney's sisters-in-law, Sylvia Varney, said: 'She was pleased to reach 100. She has always been an active woman.

'Up to about ten years ago, she used to go to whist drives. She enjoyed doing puzzles and crosswords and reading until very recently.'

Mrs Varney was born in Tooting, south London, as the third of four sisters.

She lived in the area until she married Robert in 1930.

The couple soon moved to a new house in Cheam in Surrey where they stayed until the mid-1970s.

They moved to Fairlands where Mrs Varney continued to live after her husband's death until the early summer. She was admitted to Arundel Community Hospital where she reached her 100 years.

Plans are being made by her family to move her to a care home.
