Downlands Community school receive international award

Downlands School was recently evaluated by an assessor for the awards which celebrate the achievements of schools which do exceptional work in international education.

The awards encourage schools to foster an international dimension with in the curriculum which the awards organisers say gives young people the opportunity to gain a cultural understanding and develop skills they need.

The awards assessors’ report said: “The international and dimension is firmly embedded in the curriculum and whole-school ethos at Downlands School, promoting citizenship and foreign language learning, and celebrating cultural diversity across the school and wider community.

“Well planned projects give students access to important issues in a meaningful and stimulating context.

The school in Hassocks was delighted to be recognised.

Head teacher, Mark Wignall, said: “We are delighted that we have received the award. I am very proud of all our students and staff; their commitment and involvement in so many local and global issues is commendable.”

Sir Ciarán Devane, CEO of the British Council, said: “The school’s fantastic international work has rightfully earned it this prestigious award. The award is a great chance for schools to demonstrate the important work they’re doing to bring the world into their classrooms.”
