DRINK DRIVE CAMPAIGN STARTS

And for the first time ever, the initiative will also target those who are driving under the influence of drugs.

Sussex Police will be targeting drivers who are under the influence as part of the national ACPO (Association for Chief Police Officers) co-ordinated anti-drink and drug driving campaign which will run throughout the month of December.

During December 2004, 80 people were killed or injured on the roads of Sussex in drink/drug related collisions.

Insp Phil Clarke, from the Road Policing Department, said: "This is unacceptable and those who choose to drive whilst under the influence of drink or drugs, endangering themselves and others, can expect to be brought to justice."

The Road Policing Department will be working with partner organisations mounting targeted road safety checks around Sussex from December 1, as well as increasing patrols. All drivers involved in a collision will be breath tested, irrespective of whether or not alcohol is suspected.

Insp Clarke added: "Christmas should be a time for celebration, not the misery that results from the unlawful, dangerous and anti-social actions of a selfish minority. We hope people will think twice before driving under the influence - not only during the festive season, but all year round."
