Drink-driver gets jail and ASBO

Anthony Davies, of Sutherland Avenue, Bexhill, was caught driving in Pevensey on the A259 despite being banned for five years in 2003.

He was also nearly three times over the limit and a judge described his offences as 'a potentially lethal combination'.

Davies added to a long list of convictions when the was sentenced at Eastbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday last week.

Sharon Howard, prosecuting, said he was stopped at about 10.20pm after officers saw him 'swerving all over the road'.

A test later showed he had 99mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mg.

Terry Ballard, defending, said: "He accepts full responsibility for this offence and his record speaks for itself.

"Custody had demonstrably failed in the past, he would be helped more by the drink impaired drivers scheme and a community rehabilitation programme."

District judge Paul Tain said he had no choice but to jail Davies.

He told him: "You have one of the longest records I have ever seen.

"You have more than 100 offences which includes a history of breaking court orders and often driving while disqualified with excess alcohol - which in my experience is a lethal combination."

He sent him to prison for 160 days. Davies was also made the subject of an anti-social behaviour order (ASBO). Courts will take any further offending more seriously as a result.
