DROUGHT ORDER REFUSED

A WATER company has been refused permission to extract more water from the Ouse at Barcombe.

South East Water wanted a drought permit to be able at certain times to reduce the river flow by 10 million litres a day.

But the Environment Agency has ruled that the company has not put up a convincing enough case, given the risk of possible harm to the environment.

South East Water applied for the drought permit to allow it to take more water from the Ouse to help secure supplies for customers in East and West Sussex and West Kent.
