'Drunkest person I ever met' - Man banned from roads for drink-driving

A man described by a police officer as the drunkest person he ever met has been banned from the roads.

Richard May, retired, of Bishopric in Horsham, was arrested on December 11 after the BMW he was driving left the road and hit a tree on the A24 at Kingsfold.

He was arrested and charged with failing to provide a specimen for analysis.

The 65-year-old pleaded guilty to the offence at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on January 7 and was disqualified from driving for 30 months.

He was also ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work, pay £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.

PC Jon Bennion-Jones, of the Arundel Road Policing Unit, said: “May was one of the drunkest people I have ever met. He had difficulty standing up or answering simple questions, and it was fortunate that no one was injured as a result of his decision to drink and drive home.

“I would like to thank the members of the public who stopped and helped following the collision, and ask that if anyone knows of any drink or drug-drivers, to contact us so that we can target them and get them off the roads.”

A total of 182 arrests were made in Sussex in December as part of Surrey and Sussex Police’s Christmas 2015 campaign to crackdown on drink and drug-driving.
