Egerton Park sends green message

A fun day with an vital message was held in Egerton Park on Saturday when the Friends of Egerton Park joined forces with Sure Start.

The Environmental Green Day was about information but enjoyment too, with the emphasis on re-using and recycling while cutting down on waste.

Sure Start provided an activity area for families with plenty on offer for children to try, such as the Smoothie Bike provided by Hastings and Rother PCT, and entertainment by Uncle Bumble.

Chloe Stanley, a nursery assistant from Rainbow Childcare, was helping youngsters paint butterflies.

On the other side of the Park were stalls and displays by groups such as the Bexhill and Hastings branch of the World Development Movement, the Liberal Democrats, Bexhill In Bloom, and Rother Recycling.

Shirley Cook was giving demonstrations of spinning on a wheel, showing visitors how she creates hats, scarves and other items of clothing using Alpaca wool and - perhaps the ultimate in enterprising recycling

- dog hair.

Bexhill MP Greg Barker attended the event and was shown around by organiser Christine Govier.

She commented: "The Friends of Egerton Park was set up with the help of Rother District Council to support Rother's bid to regenerate the park using Heritage Lottery fund."

The Friends of Egerton Park received a cheque for 200 presented by Darren Bush of Bexhill Round Table.

He attended the event with five year old daughter Chloe and commented:

"It was nice of Christine to ask us to support them. Bexhill Round Table always likes to support local events and the park, and this is a worthwhile cause."
