Election 2015: Tory women take over in East Sussex

And now, nearly one third of MPs are women - with 191 women elected in 650 seats.

Tory Caroline Ansell defeated Liberal Democrat Stephen Lloyd in Eastbourne by 733 votes, to become the town’s new MP - and it was a similar story in Lewes, where Conservative Maria Caulfield took Lib Dem Norman Baker’s seat.

Caroline, a mother of three and teacher, and Maria, who works as a nurse, were labelled two of “Cameron’s Cuties” and ones to watch in the run up to the election.

Tory incumbent Amber Rudd held on to her seat - Hastings and Rye - beating Labour candidate Sarah Owen by 4,796 votes.

And Rudd has bagged herself a place on the cabinet - as the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change.

Nus Ghani stood for the Conservatives in Wealden, after former Tory MP Charles Hendry stood down.

She won a landslide victory with 32,508 votes - 1,418 more votes than her predecessor did in the last election.

Other wins across the county include conservatives Huw Merriman, who won Bexhill and Battle, following in the footsteps of long-standing Tory MP Greg Barker.

To the West of the county, Conservative Simon Kirby held on to his Brighton Kemptown seat, which covers Peacehaven, with Green MP Caroline Lucas keeping hold of Brighton Pavilion with an increased majority, and Labour’s Peter Kyle taking Hove.
