It was a tough campaign, Mr Buckland admitted, with Mr Watkins taking a shock 576 votes (26.5 per cent) and Labour’s George O’Neil receiving a total of 463 (21.3 per cent).

Mr Britton took only 16 per cent (348 votes) while independent David Jones, earned 106 votes (4.8 per cent).

Speaking of his defeat, Mr Britton said: “As the defeated incumbent I would just like to say what a privilege it has been to serve Littlehampton Town on West Sussex County Council.

“I warmly congratulate Ian on his hard work and tough-fought campaign. Although we are from different political parties he thoroughly deserves his victory.

“I’m sure Ian will represent Littlehampton well.”
